History
Richmond, Virginia
is situated along the banks of the James River and boasts an interesting
history. The city boasts several historic landmarks, such as the Capitol
Building, James River, and Kanawha Canal, Shockoe Slip, and many historic
churches. Additionally, there is an exciting nightlife scene with numerous
restaurants and bars open throughout town. Richmond, the capital of the
Confederacy during the Civil War, served as a hub of military and political
activity. It housed organizations such as the Ordnance Department, Quartermaster Department, and commissary. Many women also
worked there in sewing uniforms, producing percussion caps, and signing
currency to support their cause. During the War, Richmond's population nearly
tripled as soldiers from throughout the South joined the fight. It also housed
thousands of wounded and sick soldiers as well as numerous prisoners of war.
This sudden surge of people brought with it food shortages, fuel shortages,
skyrocketing prices and other social issues that would be expected of any
rapidly expanding city. Furthermore, the city was home to hundreds of factories
producing nearly everything needed for the war effort - from weapons to
railroad track. After the war, the city began to recover economically. The
tobacco industry played a major role in this rebirth; Philip Whitlock even
started his own company that produced cheroots (cheap cigars) which he sold to
the American Tobacco Company in 1891. Other major industries during this time
included iron works and flour mills, both of which played an essential role in
the growth of Richmond.
By the turn of the 19th century, Richmond had become one of America's most
prosperous cities. It boasted numerous tobacco companies, iron and flour mills,
as well as several railroads. After the Civil War, Richmond's economy recovered
quickly due to an upswing in tobacco product popularity. Many Richmond Jews
were instrumental in this resurgence, such as Philip Whitlock and Charles
Millhiser. Additionally, many Richmond Jews assisted Jewish refugees from
Europe in settling in America. William Thalhimer, a well-known department store
owner, organized an initiative to settle these refugees in his city by hiring
Ernest Gunzberg as its administrator and recruiting other prominent Richmond
Jews to offer affidavits and funds for this purpose.
