Centreville Virginia - A Great Place to Visit

Centreville Virginia

Centreville was established in 1792 on the turnpike road connecting Alexandria with Colchester, Dumfries, Middleburg, George Town (later Georgetown), Fauquier Court House, and Leesburg. At the height of the Civil War, Richmond was an important staging ground for both Union and Confederate armies due to its proximity to Washington, D.C., as well as its elevated topography.

History

Centreville Virginia boasts a rich heritage that has been preserved within the community. Through good and bad times alike, Centreville Virginia has never lost its identity or spirit. Centreville began as Newgate, a settlement located along the main north-south highway in Fairfax County during the 18th century. Once granted town status in 1792, its residents hoped it would become an important hub of transportation and commerce. Unfortunately, Centreville's population declined throughout the 19th century due to tobacco production and emigration to Western states. But then came the Civil War, and the people of Centreville rose up to the challenge and restored their town's identity.

Centreville was an important staging ground during the Civil War, holding both Union and Confederate armies at different points. Due to its location near Manassas Junction and connection with railroad systems, Centreville served as a vital meeting place for both sides. In the summer of 1861, a major battle took place nearby between the Union and Confederate armies. Both sides suffered heavy casualties in this encounter. At Blackburn's Ford, on the road between Centreville and Manassas Junction, a fierce battle took place between Union army and Confederates. This location significantly affected the course of the Civil War; both armies exchanged fire there. Mount Gilead House, once the home of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston during the Civil War, is one of Centreville's most iconic landmarks. Today, this historic property is a popular stop for visitors to the area who wish to learn more about Centreville's role in American history. The Mount Gilead Museum provides free tours of the house.
