Suffolk Virginia - Small-Town Charm and Eco-Adventure

Suffolk Virginia

Suffolk offers an irresistible combination of small-town charm, arts, history, and culture alongside eco-adventure activities for an unforgettable weekend in Virginia. Suffolk once served as a major transportation hub for railroad lines like the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad, Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad, and Atlantic Coast Railroad. Today you can still experience its railroading heritage at Seaboard Station Railroad Museum.

Seaboard Coastline Trail

The Seaboard Coastline Trail is a growing project that will eventually span 11.5 miles, linking Suffolk and Chesapeake in southern Virginia. Additionally, it forms part of the larger 41-mile South Hampton Roads Trail which will connect those cities as well as Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. This trail is a multi-modal pedestrian, biking, and horseback riding (equestrian) pathway that follows along the abandoned Seaboard Coastal Railroad right of way. Eventually, it will connect to attractions like Virginia Railway Museum in Norfolk or New England Aquarium in Boston as well as many other points along the way. For the more adventurous walkers, bicyclists, and horseback riders the trail begins in downtown Suffolk and follows an old rail line eastward through several small towns before ending at the southern tip of Chesapeake near Bromay Street. It makes for a pleasant shady walk that's easily visible from either Interstate 95 or your car's dashboard.

Although the path is relatively short, it's well-maintained and features some nice curves to keep people walking or cycling interested. There are also plenty of photo ops along the way - including a bridge over Norfolk Bay and an extravagant display of vibrant flowers at its southern terminus. At Prentis Street's end, Suburban Drive's large paved lot and Shoulders Hill Road's northern terminus near Bob White Parkway offer free parking and bike fix-it stations as well as porta-potties. The Seaboard Coastline Trail, an 11.5-mile route connecting two of Suffolk County's largest cities, has recently joined this growing trail movement.

Southern Gun Works & Museum

For gun enthusiasts, a visit to Southern Gun Works & Museum is an absolute must. The reconstructed 18th-century gunsmith shop features over three dozen long rifles on display as well as gunsmith demonstrations and symposiums. On Main Street in Suffolk, this striking building showcases Flemish bond brickwork and frieze band windows. Additionally, it has a double chimney as well as a Greek Revival entrance. Visitors to the museum can gain insight into the city's past and meet its inhabitants. The guides are knowledgeable and will answer any queries you might have. Art enthusiasts will delight in the museum's collection of paintings and sculptures by local artists as well as paintings by renowned European painters such as Rembrandt, Velasquez, and Van Dyke.

Experience the breathtaking scenery by taking a walk around or having a picnic with family and friends. Situated along Bennett's Creek, this park boasts a playground, fishing pond, and pavilion for special events. Another fascinating activity to do in Suffolk is visiting the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. This destination is home to various animal species and offers visitors a chance to view them in their natural environments. Its trails are open daily for visitors who can engage in activities like bird-watching, biking, or kayaking.

Travelers who appreciate nature and adventure should make it a must-visit destination. With 113,000 acres of land to explore, this park is ideal for hiking, biking, birdwatching, and more. Suffolk was an important military outpost during the Civil War. Its defenses included several forts such as Bowers' Hill and Constant Wharf, built by Confederates to defend against Union invasion. However, the Union also maintained strong defenses in the area. They constructed a system of 10 forts that allowed them to control the roads and railroads leading into the city. John Peck designed these forts so his artillery and infantry had a field of fire that reached as far as Blackwater River.
